RTAC Recommendation
The City of Roswell’s appointed community-led Transportation Advisory Commission (RTAC) passed an official motion strongly recommending that the Roswell Mayor and City Council immediately support a modified Historic Gateway design concept alternative that is based on a smaller road diet reconfiguration along SR 9/ Atlanta Street to include two lanes (north/ south travel lanes) that provide safe continuous traffic flow across the river (red stop light free!), a raised planted median center turn lane that eliminates the dangerous center reversible lane, and a grade separated bow-tie intersection (roundabouts installed on opposite sides of SR 9/ Atlanta Street along Azalea Drive and Riverside Road). This innovative new alternative Historic Gateway concept proposal is planned to provide the following overall benefits to the City of Roswell:
Removes the dangerous reversible lanes
Fits within the existing right-of-way (ROW)
Prevents inducing regional cut-thru traffic through our Historic District
Implements the burying of overhead electrical power/ utility lines as promised by the City in TSPLOST 1
Designed for continuous traffic flow – eliminates traffic signals and minimizes left turns
Reduces economic and community disruption to local businesses
Large capital budget reduction – elimination of at least one proposed bridge and a narrower build footprint
Less right-of-way impacts to local businesses and private property
Improved community safety with sidewalks and a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists
Slower vehicular speeds maintained throughout the distinctive Historic District
Reduces overall environmental and cultural impacts
Supports a placemaking destination/ neighborhood node called Allenbrook as prescribed in the City’s in the 2012 Historic Gateway Master Plan
Preserves the beautiful tree canopy through Roswell’s gateway entrance into the City as prescribed in the 2019 Roswell Historic District Master Plan
